TEA TOWELS
These tea towels are designed using Artificial Intelligence. The first automated weaving machine, invented by Marie Jacquard in 1804, was the predecessor of the computer. The punch cards from the weaving machine became the zeros and ones that composters use to function. The pattern for these tea towels are generated by an AI using old Jacquard patterns.
Artificial Intelligence can store and process an enormous amount of data. I made a model and experimented with a lot of Jacquard patterns, from which the AI can make a new pattern.
The designs below are a selection of this output. These are based on the old Jacquard patterns. Artificial Intelligence can be seen as the continuation of computational technology that started with Jacquard’s weaving machine, so you could say that AI is the grandchild of the Jacquard weaving machine. By combining the two in the tea towels I attempt to bridge the past to the present and show how far technology has come.
The Jacquard loom actually made the patterns itself. The history of the machines is woven into the patterns. And can continue to make endless patterns, each pattern is different and unique.
